Dermot Gallagher reviews controversial decisions in the Premier League after each round of games, on behalf of Sky Sports.
The former top referee has now given his call on these incidents in the Bournemouth v Newcastle match.
Dermot Gallagher looking at what happened during key moments in this eventful match on the south coast.
Newcastle United fighting back to take a point.
Dermot Gallagher talking to Sky Sports about this these Bournemouth 1 Newcastle 1 controversial incidents:
Incident:
Joelinton grabs Neto to stop him starting a quick break and the goalkeeper throws himself to the ground, the referee awarding a yellow card:
Dermot Gallagher verdict:
“I think in no way shape or form is this a red card.
“If you look at it, his intention is purely to delay the goalkeeper [Neto] from getting that ball up the pitch on the counter-attack.
“It looks worse because the goalkeeper is moving but if you look carefully, he grabs the goalkeeper by the chest – not the throat or the face.
“He’s breaking up a promising attack – it doesn’t mean he is covering for defenders. His sole purpose is to stop the goalkeeper releasing the ball.
“It is reckless and unsporting.”
Sue Smith:
“I think it’s a red card.
“It’s serious foul play, where he connects with him it looks to me that it’s around the neck.
“I was really surprised he wasn’t sent off.”
Stephen Warnock:
“I’m with Dermot – I don’t think it’s a red card as it’s not around the neck.”
Incident:
Bournemouth think they have scored a late winner and the on-pitch referee gives it, only for the VAR to disallow it for handball.
Dermot Gallagher verdict:
“It raises a lot of points in so much as everyone seems happy with the goal.
“Everyone expects a goal.
“When it went to VAR and they said they were checking for handball, I never thought it would have been overturned.
“They fed back from the VAR that it was a factual decision.
“I think it’s contradictory in so much as the VAR thought it was low enough to give a handball.
“I was a referee and thought it was high enough not to give a handball, so it is subjective.
“I think there’s a lot of people who are going to be in my camp and not the VAR’s.
“Many people will disagree.
“I think many referees would have given a goal.”
Should referee David Coote have been sent to the monitor when VAR ruled out that late disallowed goal?
Dermot Gallagher verdict:
“He’s been told it’s a factual decision because the VAR has decided that it’s hit a part of his arm that in his opinion is handball.
“He says it is factual so in his eyes, that’s factual.
“A factual decision in my opinion has become subjective because of the wording.
“If I was sent to the screen and seen it, I would have given a goal.
“I see no evidence that it’s handball.”
