Dermot Gallagher reviews controversial decisions in the Premier League after each round of games, on behalf of Sky Sports.

The former top referee has now given his call on these incidents in the Brentford v Newcastle United match.

Dermot Gallagher looking at what happened during a few key moments in an eventful match in West London.

Newcastle United very much deserving to win this game and the eventual two goal winning margin the minimum they deserved.

Dermot Gallagher talking to Sky Sports about Brentford 2 Newcastle 4 controversial decisions:

Incident:

‘Should Newcastle have been given a penalty?

Simon Hooper awarded Newcastle a penalty for Bryan Mbuemo’s trip on Lewis Hall but VAR spotted it was outside the box. This was another tight decision – how sure are you they got the correct?’

Dermot Gallagher verdict:

“This is a tough one as I know why Simon Hooper has given a penalty as it looks like he’s been tripped in the box.

“But the replays show it was outside.

“The leg that was fouled was outside the box.

“It’s a factual decision so the referee doesn’t have to go to the screen.”

Incident(s):

‘Ivan Toney’s opener against Newcastle was disallowed following a VAR check for offside. This looked a tight one but right outcome?

There was another very tight offside call that saw Sean Longstaff have a goal disallowed. This one was flagged on the field but did they get this one right?’

Dermot Gallagher verdict:

“This is why I’d never be an assistant referee as I wouldn’t spot the Longstaff one.

“It’s so, so tight. but Isak is offside. It’s an incredible spot.”

I agree that Isak was marginally offside and it was obvious the Toney one had to be disallowed, the replays showing two clear offsides in the move.

However, with Lewis Hall I’m still convinced it should have been a penalty. I think replays confirm there were two separate fouls, one on Hall outside the box but he kept going and for me, the second foul brought him down in the penalty area.
