The former top referee has now given his call on these incidents in the Newcastle v Aton Villa match.

A match where Newcastle United dominated and the three goal winning margin was the least NUFC deserved.

Dermot Gallagher talking to Sky Sports about these Newcastle v Aston Villa controversial incidents:

INCIDENT:

Jhon Duran was sent off for Aston Villa for kicking out at Newcastle’s Fabian Schar.

DERMOT GALLAGHER:

“I thought it was a red card.

“People say he’s off balance because Schar’s pulling him and that there’s always going to be contact, but I thought he could avoid that. That’s what Anthony Taylor has seen.

“What I like about it is Taylor’s tracking it, seen what has happened and takes his time.

“I don’t have a problem with that as the ball is dead. He’s probably got some input from the assistants and fourth officials. He’s taken his time, it’s not rash.

“His right leg, it changes direction. That’s what Anthony’s seen. I can see that. The assistant said he’s seen it too.

“The decision was made in real time, nobody went to a monitor like a CSI breakdown. The process was about human beings made the right decision.”

INCIDENT:

Unai Emery has said that Aston Villa will appeal Jhon Duran’s three match ban after his red card.

DERMOT GALLAGHER:

“The VAR looked at it. He felt the referee got it right.

“Let’s say he sends him to the screen, and when you see it in slow motion, it looks really bad. So if Taylor is sent there, I’m convinced he still would have said it’s a red card.

“Emery kept alluding to a three-match ban. Is three matches too much for that? That may be a reason why he’s so upset with it.

“They would have to prove the referee has made a clear and obvious error – that makes the appeal pretty difficult.”

INCIDENT:

Joelinton was booked at the end of the first half. Morgan Rogers claimed he was hit in the face by the Brazilian and embarrassingly threw himself to the ground, TV replays clearly showing that [Joelinton hitting him in the face] wasn’t the case.

DERMOT GALLAGHER:

“The referee has dealt with this really well. Whether he should taken action against Rogers is debatable.

“He certainly doesn’t hit him in the face, it’s not violent, but the player doesn’t have to do that [throw himself to the ground clutching his face].”

INCIDENT:

Newcastle thought they’d made it 2-0 through Joelinton, but the assistant flagged for a goal kick as the ball went out of play before Alexander Isak could cross it.

DERMOT GALLAGHER:

“It’s clear if the linesman does what he did which was stick to the line. He made the ground to see behind the line. Four yards behind, it would have been missed.”

INCIDENT:

Isak thought he’d got himself a second goal but it was ruled out for offside. It looked tight between him and Ezri Konsa.

DERMOT GALLAGHER:

“People think the defender is there but it has to be two defenders. He’s offside, great spot by the official.”

INCIDENT:

Another goal disallowed, this time for Bruno Guimaraes. Handball was given after a VAR check.

DERMOT GALLAGHER:

“He doesn’t know anything about it but it strikes him on the elbow and goes in.

“What is interesting is it goes in off Digne on the way in, but if the player shoots at goal, it’s going in and it strikes the defender, the attacker is still credited with the goal. Very unfortunate but has to be disallowed.”
