In its efforts to give back to society, the Margret Ogbeide Memorial Foundation has awarded scholarships to 12 secondary school students in Abavo kingdom, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The founder, Mr Jonah Ogbeide, told South-South PUNCH on Tuesday that the gesture was to make the students, especially underprivileged ones, excel academically.
Reflecting on the foundation’s journey since its establishment in 2023, Ogbeide explained that the MOM Foundation has focused on providing scholarships to students from underprivileged backgrounds.
He said, “I welcome you all to the 2024 Margaret Ogbeide Memorial Foundation scholarship award ceremony.
“Today, we gather to celebrate not only the remarkable achievements of our students but also the shared journey we have undertaken as a community to support education and create opportunities for our youth.
“Since the establishment of the Margaret Ogbeide Memorial Foundation in 2023, our mission has been to uplift the youth in our rural communities by providing educational opportunities and supporting personal growth.
“Our focus has always been on ensuring that every young person, regardless of their financial background, has the chance to succeed.
“In 2023, we awarded scholarships to six deserving JSS2 students, supporting their education and helping ease the financial burden on their families. This was a significant milestone for us, and we are proud of the progress we made in our first year.
“This year, we have taken another important step by identifying 12 exceptional students from JSS2 and JSS3 through our 2024 scholarship examination that started in June. These students will receive scholarships to support their continued academic success, and we believe they have the potential to achieve great things.
“The best 12 students from each public school were selected for the scholarship exam through their promotion results via the support of the principal and education ministry.”
Underscoring the importance of giving back to society, Ogbeide pledged the foundation’s dedication to supporting education in rural communities.
He added, “We remained committed to expanding our support for underprivileged students, one of the key initiatives we intend to introduce this year is free WAEC/NECO examinations enrolment to reduce the financial burden of vulnerable families in rural communities.
“By covering these examination fees, we aim to remove the financial barriers that often prevent students from completing their secondary education.
“We also have additional initiatives including providing food supplies to vulnerable families and enhancing community safety through the installation of solar-powered streetlights.
“We also aimed at expanding our support for youth through skills development, and other community-building initiatives.”
He called for partnerships from organizations and individuals to increase the number of beneficiaries of the scholarship.
The traditional ruler of Abavo kingdom, HRM Obi Uche Irenuma, represented by the Council of Chiefs, commended the foundation for its quest to bring education to the people.
