The Ike Foundation for Autism has called for an end to the stigmatisation of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, urging Nigerians to foster a deeper understanding and acceptance of the condition.
The foundation lamented that while autism affects millions of individuals globally, there is still a widespread lack of understanding and acceptance in Nigeria.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Saturday about the foundation’s upcoming project, Lend Your Voice: 1,000 Voices of Autism, the Executive Director, Dafe Smith, stressed the importance of raising awareness and promoting inclusivity for children with autism and their families.
He stressed that to create an inclusive society, it is crucial to elevate the voices of those directly impacted by the condition.
“This occasion represents a significant milestone in our efforts to amplify voices that have long been unheard of and to bring greater attention to autism. Our goal is to foster a deeper sense of understanding, acceptance, and inclusion.
“The project seeks to provide a platform for parents and caregivers of children with autism to share their experiences. Through these stories, the foundation aims to break the stigma surrounding autism, encourage empathy, and advocate for the rights and inclusion of autistic individuals in society.
“This initiative seeks to uplift the voices of those most affected by autism—parents and caregivers—while promoting greater understanding and acceptance of autistic individuals. Through storytelling, education, and advocacy, we hope to build stronger, more inclusive communities.”
