The recently concluded international break gave national teams in Europe an opportunity to take a look at the players that could be available for the upcoming 2024 European Championship.
A lot of pride is at stake for top European teams such as Germany, Spain, France, and England, among others, who failed to perform during the last edition of the tournament, with Italy cruising to the trophy in style.
Spain, especially, would want to return to their absolute best 12 years since winning the tournament.
La Roja, in fact, arguably boast of the strongest-ever squad that competed in the Euros, winning the 2008 and then the 2012 edition, with a World Cup triumph separating the two, as well.
Ahead of the tournament, Alfredo Matilla has reported that there will be at least four Barcelona players with a fixed spot in the Spanish roster unless there are any setbacks.
Pedri, Ferran the ‘senior heads’
The four players are namely, Pedri, Ferran Torres, Lamine Yamal, and Pau Cubarsi.
Torres is the senior-most player of this quartet, and even he is only 24 right now. Pedri is next, at 21.
The former is one of the leading bagsmen among the current Spanish squad, with 18 goals in 40 caps for him so far. The latter has clocked up 18 appearances since debuting in 2020, but has no goals so far.
Yamal, meanwhile, seems to have locked a starting spot for himself on the right-wing. He put on a dazzling performance against Brazil last night, and could be one of the players to watch out for during the tournament.
Cubarsi, meanwhile, will likely not be a starter for Spain should he get to travel. But he will definitely be in contention alongside Robin Le Normand, Daniel Vivian, and perhaps even Inigo Martinez.
What about Gavi and Alejandro Balde?
Gavi tore his ACL the last time he played for Spain, which ruled him out for the rest of the season. Balde, meanwhile, has been sidelined with a hamstring injury that needed to be operated.
It seems highly unlikely that Gavi will be a part of the Spanish squad for the tournament, even if he recovers in time. Not only will Barcelona not want to risk his fitness, but the lack of match fitness could be a huge hurdle.
Balde, meanwhile, has a decent shot at a spot in the final squad. Alejandro Grimaldo and Marc Cucurella were the left-backs in Spain’s squad this fortnight, with the latter especially having an unimpressive season with Chelsea.
Should Balde manage to return to full fitness in time, he could replace Cucurella in the final roster.
