At least, four persons sustained varying degrees of injuries in two accidents that occurred in the Obanikoro and Chevron areas of Lagos State on Monday.
The Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, in a statement, said the accidents occurred as a result of excess speeding.
According to Taofiq, the first accident occurred on Ikorodu Road when a Suzuki minibus overturned with three of the occupants getting trapped.
He stressed that LASTMA operatives at the scene of the incident were able to rescue the occupants of the vehicle which included the driver, his assistant and a female passenger.
He said, “The first incident occurred on Ikorodu Road, inward Obanikoro, near Aret Adams House, Savoil, involving a high-speed lone accident with a painted commercial Suzuki mini-bus, registration number KTU 527 XN. This vehicle overturned, entrapping the driver, a conductor, and a female passenger; all of whom suffered significant injuries.
“LASTMA officers responded with remarkable immediacy, orchestrating a comprehensive rescue effort. The bus driver, who sustained critical fractures, was expedited to the National Orthopedic Hospital in Igbobi for urgent treatment. Simultaneously, the injured conductor received immediate medical assistance, facilitated by the Lagos State Ambulance Services.
“The female passenger, also injured, was conscientiously handed over by LASTMA officers to her family members, who arrived at the scene shortly thereafter.”
He added that the second accident occurred when a private car lost control due to speeding and swerved into a gutter along the Lekki-Ajah Expressway and injured a passerby.
“The second accident transpired near the Chevron area along the Lekki-Ajah Expressway, where an over-speeding lone Toyota Camry (registration KSF 913 JK) lost control and veered into a deep gutter.
“Thanks to LASTMA’s rapid intervention, further casualties were avoided, and an injured passerby was promptly tended to while the vehicle was carefully removed and secured under the supervision of Ilasan Police personnel,” Taofiq said.
Reacting to the incident, the LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, urged residents and motorists to be vigilant while driving and walking along the expressway.
“The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, lauded the exemplary actions of LASTMA personnel, remarking, “Our officers are rigorously trained to respond to emergencies with precision. Their swift action in these incidents underscores LASTMA’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and ensuring the security of all road users in Lagos. The wellbeing of our citizens remains paramount.”

In Ogun, seven people narrowly escaped death in a multiple accident involving two cars and a truck at the Mowe end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the incident happened on Sunday at about 5 pm when a car, while at top speed, lost control and rammed into another moving vehicle.
The affected vehicle according to an eyewitness, Olamide Samson, also lost control and hit an articulated truck in the process leading to gridlock along the axis.
He said, “I was coming from Ilesa and on getting close to Redemption Camp, I discovered that there was a long traffic. it was at the point of getting to the accident scene that we saw a car under the truck, only cars could manage to go through the available space left due to the accident as trucks could not.”
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ogun Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Florence Okpe, said the incident was caused by speed and loss of control.
“Three vehicles were involved with seven occupants. There was no injury or death,” she added.
