Manchester United defender Willy Kambwala played a key role during the team’s draw with Liverpool at the weekend. The youngster was called into the starting line-up to face a title chasing Liverpool side and he stood up their best attacking players like a seasoned professional.
With the injury list growing by the week, Erik ten Hag had no other choice but to call on 19-year-old defender Willy Kambwala to start against Liverpool. It was not a promotion by default because the manager could’ve played Casemiro at centre-back instead.
The youngster impressed and managed to keep Darwin Nunez quiet in multiple occasions. None of Liverpool’s attacking players could get the better of him on the day, which bodes well for the future.
Kambwala’s performance did not go unnoticed in France, where he was signed in 2020, at the age of 16.
French newspaper L’Equipe selected Kambwala in their team of the week, consisting of French players across Europe’s top leagues, including their own Ligue 1. They credited the youngster for holding his own against some of Liverpool’s senior established stars.
Kambwala’s stock will rise as a result of this performance but at least it shows that United have more promising players coming through. The youth academy really is something else.
Kambawa likely to start against Bournemouth
With the injuries only getting worse for United, Harry Maguire is likely to be joined by Kambawala in the heart of defence against Bournemouth.
The youngster will be aiming for another strong display alongside the England international but we will be facing very different opponents in Bournemouth.
Let us know if you think Kambwala will start against Bournemouth.
