At FC Barcelona, the subject Frenkie de Jong crystallizes the debates. While the Catalan club is working on the extensions of some of its executives (Pedri, Gavi, Araujo, etc.), that of the Dutchman is not yet assured. Under contract until 2026, the 27-year-old has moved down the midfield hierarchy under the orders of Hansi Flick. On the sidelines between April and October, after an ankle injury, the former Ajax Amsterdam player was overtaken by young Marc Casadó. His playing time particularly attests to this: since October 1, De Jong has taken part in 13 matches with Barça (362 minutes)… including only two as a starter.
However, he wants to stay in Catalonia and has repeated this on numerous occasions. In the past, several European clubs, such as Manchester United, had tried to attract him. But De Jong had rejected all these advances, claiming to be fulfilled at Barcelona. “ Stay at Barça? Yes, I’m very happy here with my family, that’s for sure “, he declared last June. However, Barça had tried to extend his lease, but the player had not given a response to this proposal until it was considered obsolete by the leaders.
His agent comes out of silence, Barça gives him an ultimatum
However, the will of the FDJ clan has not changed. While rumors were sending the Dutchman to Saudi Arabia, his agent Ali Dursun came out of silence to deny these reports. “ Rumors about a possible transfer to Saudi Arabia are completely absurd. And this distracts Frenkie (de Jong) from what he really wants: to shine at the club he loves the most and where he feels at home. And who knows, maybe we (Barça/Frenkie) will stay together longer… “, he told the Dutch media De Telegraaf. But these declarations, which were supposed to allay concerns about De Jong’s future, do not help matters.
According to SportFC Barcelona has decided to adopt a firm stance regarding Frenkie de Jong: either he renews on reduced terms or he will be transferred in the summer of 2025. Faced with his declining performances and a diminished role in the team, the club plans to release its significant salary (€1.58 million/month) to reduce its finances. If no extension agreement is found, Barça is ready to push him out, even if it means accepting a slightly lower price. The objective for the Catalan club is that he does not play the last year of his contract without extension. The plan is clear…
