On April 21 against Real Madrid, Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong suffered a massive blow as he picked up an injury.

The Dutchman, who has been sidelined since, is facing a race against time to get fit for the upcoming European Championship, even though he has been selected in the Netherlands’ squad.

De Jong ready to take a risk for Euro 2024

In a recent interview with Telegraaf, de Jong issued an update on his fitness, suggesting that he is ready to risk his fitness to play in Euro 2024.

“I am willing to take risks to play Euro 2024 for my country. But the most important thing is that it won’t become a chronic ankle injury. Right now it doesn’t look like this is the case, which is why I didn’t have surgery,” he said.

De Jong’s fitness update can be perceived as something of a positive, as it implies the midfielder does not have a serious knock in his ankle.

However, the Dutchman must still proceed with caution. Perhaps a could depend on how he recovers in the coming few weeks.

Providing further updates on his fitness, de Jong said, “I am still working individually at the moment, then I have to join back up with the group and then work towards a situation where I can get some playing time. That could indeed also be during the tournament.”

“There are no hard deadlines, but there must still be a prospect of playing in matches. Otherwise, there’s no point in staying,” he added.

Frenkie de Jong’s deadline could be June 16, when the Netherlands kickstart their Euro 2024 campaign against a Poland side led by his Barcelona teammate Robert Lewandowski.
