In a detailed interview earlier today, Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong lashed out at the misinformation spread over his salary in Catalonia and the gross mismatch between what is said and the reality.

After all, a lot of the hate towards the player in recent times has been around his massive wages and reported refusal to compromise with reports stating that he is set to earn as much as €37 million this season.

The real salary

As brought to light in a recent report by SPORT, the reality could not be more far off from the figure making the rounds in the media.

De Jong’s salary comprises fixed and variable components, and the breakdown of his wages are as follows.

The fixed wage the Dutchman is owed this season stands at €19 million gross. To that is added a fixed bonus of €4.2 million which takes his total fixed salary to €23.2 million.

The aforementioned bonus includes not only the loyalty bonus that is offered to several other players including Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski but also the delayed payments from the COVID period when the player offered to defer his wages.

Added to this figure is a variable bonus of €2 million if the midfielder participated in at least 60% of Barcelona’s games this season.

While the season is indeed long, his current injury has prevented him from making a debut under Hansi Flick and he may not reach the variable sum.

The total amount De Jong can earn this season, thus, stands at €25.2 million which is close to €12 million less than the reported wages.

The outlet even furthers that De Jong is, in fact, not even the highest-paid Barcelona player with Lewandowski earning a total of €32 million for his services this campaign.
