A person from Florida has missed out on bagging their $36 million Mega Millions lottery win after failing to claim their prize.

CNN reports that the undisclosed winner had until Sunday (February 11) to claim the jackpot.

Mega Millions Winner Misses Out On Millions After Failing To Secure His Prize Money

Mind you, roomies, this individual had SIX MONTHS to claim the sum after becoming a winner back on August 15 of last year.

Their winning numbers were 18, 39, 42, 47, 63, and number 7 for the Mega Ball.

But with nobody coming forward, Florida Lottery confirmed that the person in question had missed their opportunity.

Talk about fumbling the bag.

“Florida law requires that 80 percent of unclaimed prize funds from expired tickets be transferred directly to the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund,” the company told FOX Business.

“The remaining 20 percent is returned to the prize pool from which future prizes are awarded or used for special prize promotions. Should a POWERBALL or MEGA MILLIONS jackpot ticket not be claimed within 180 days of the applicable draw date, the funds to pay the unclaimed jackpot will be returned to the lottery members in their proportion of sales for the jackpot rollover series.”

The person who won the ticket is unfortunately no longer eligible to receive their winnings. The New York Post reports that their failure to collect the millions will now help fund schools, colleges, and scholarships.

The statement continued to say that the lottery members would receive a proportional return from the jackpot rollover series’ sales.

Lottery Rules Vary From State To State

Every state has different regulations as far as claiming a jackpot is concerned.

The state of Florida grants 180 days for the collection of the prize.

Additionally, the lottery’s policy entitles the store that sells the winning ticket to a percentage as a reward for the point of sale.

Roomies, would something like this ever happen to you, and how would you have reacted in this situation, chile?
