Fund research into medicinal plants, don urges govt

A professor of Organic Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry, University of Uyo, Bassey Antia,  has called on the government to provide funding for research into medicinal plants in the country.

Antia said such support could lead to the production of standardised and verified plant medicines to cure various ailments suffered by the people.

The don made the recommendation on Friday while delivering the 105th inaugural lecture of the university, titled “Natural Products Chemistry: Where the Mysteries of the Natural World Manifest in Atoms  Molecules and Ions”.

He said, “Since medicinal from plants show enormous potential to improve the health and well-being of consumers, the government or her agencies should support research into our medicinal plants as this might lead to the production of standardised and verified plant medicinals.

“This will assist to increase the armamentarium of therapeutic agents available in our environment for the alleviation and possible cure of various ailments.”

Antia also recommended that excellent facilities be provided at research institutions and universities, adding that more trained scientists should also be deployed.

“It is obvious from the research findings that excellent facilities must be provided in our research institutions and universities and competent scientists trained internationally to handle these facilities. That will enable us to find functions for the various natural products in our natural environment” Antia added.
