Barcelona’s hopes of signing top target Nico Williams this summer suffered a major blow when former presidential candidate Victor Font confirmed the club are not in a position to sign the Athletic Club forward.

In recent days, Barça have also shifted their focus away from Nico, stepping up their efforts to sign Dani Olmo instead.

Barcelona open to Nico move in 2025

A recent report from Mundo Deportivo has offered more light on Barcelona’s pursuit of Nico Williams this summer.

It appears the Catalans are open to making a move for Nico next summer. But the club will only consider a 2025 move for the young winger if he does not renew at Athletic Club.

In recent days, it has been claimed that Athletic Club are in talks with Nico over a renewal that could see his release clause being increased substantially.

Nico’s current release clause stands at €58 million, which is considered reasonable from Barcelona’s perspective.

However, if Athletic Club manages to increase the release clause to somewhere close to €100 million, Barcelona are ready to close the door on the pursuit of Nico.

Barcelona’s focus this summer

The club’s priority, however, is to sign the Spanish international in the ongoing summer transfer window.

The player, for his part, has yet to make a final decision on his future, but the forward is reportedly tilting towards a prolonged stay at Athletic Club.

Nico is still enjoying his holiday after a successful Euro 2024. He is expected to formally return to training by August 12, but one can expect the forward to make a final decision well in advance.
