Accra-based Global Engineering Technology (GET) Group of John Wesley Methodist Basic School has outshined ninety-nine participating teams in the 2023 Ghana Science and Tech Explorer Price (GSTEP) challenge to clinch the ultimate prize.

Passionate about addressing societal problems using their Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) knowledge, the team of six young innovators produced an anti-sleep device for motorists, targeted at tackling the increasing road accidents in Ghana.

Their project surely captured the organisers’ attention and that of other stakeholders present at the exhibition. The Get Group has been awarded seventy thousand Ghana cedis (GH₵ 70,000) worth of STEM equipment for their school and a citation from the sponsors and organisms.

AquaSentry of Service Primary/JHS emerged as the 1st runner-up, while Light Bearers of El-Ntiaddo School Complex-Abaam from the Eastern Region won as the 2nd runner-up.

The 2023 GSTEP exhibitions and awards ceremony, which was held at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), witnessed a wide range of inventions by junior high school students from the Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Eastern regions.

In attendance were the Chief of Staff, Frema Opare, Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Swiss Ambassador in Ghana, Simone Giger, traditional leaders, and experts in the fields of STEM, among others.

The theme of this year’s edition is “Private and public partnerships forging the future of Ghana: STEM education as a stepping stone.”
