President of the Professionals Forum of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sam Pee Yalley, has appealed to Ghanaians to give the NDC government time to properly engage stakeholders in the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Mr Yalley highlighted the complexity of the galamsey issue and the need for thoughtful engagement before implementing policies.

“We’re dealing with a matter that has engaged our Armed Forces and one that a former president even hinged his presidency on—and nothing substantial happened. We need time to assess the situation thoroughly and engage all relevant stakeholders before taking decisive action,” he said in an interview on JoYNews' Newsfile on Saturday, February 22.

He also criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for rushing to judge the NDC's early steps in tackling illegal mining adding that the current administration is still in the process of fully understanding the scope of the problem.

“If you don’t fully understand the problem, how can you fix it? Since taking office, we’ve been analyzing the situation, and soon we will roll out concrete measures...We are fully aware of the urgency, but we must get it right. Hasty actions won’t yield lasting results,” he noted.

On the potential solutions, he expressed support for bold actions, including possibly declaring a state of emergency.

He also called for national unity in addressing the crisis, stating, “This isn’t about NDC or NPP—it’s about saving our land, our water bodies, and the future of our country. We must come together, engage all stakeholders, and find lasting solutions.”
