Gavin Newsom is convening a special session of the state legislature next month to “protect California values amid the incoming administration of Donald Trump.
The special session, to start on Dec. 2, will focus on boosting state legal resources and funding to protect civil rights, reproductive freedom, climate action and immigrant families, Newsom’s office said in a statement. That includes state litigation as well as federal lawsuits “aimed at undermining California’s laws and policies.”
“This is the first of several actions by the Newsom administration, in partnership with the Legislature, as the Governor begins shoring up California’s defenses against an incoming federal administration that has threatened the state on multiple fronts,” the governor’s office said.
It’s also a signal that Newsom plans to be one of Donald Trump’s most high profile Democratic foes. On Wednesday, Newsom released a statement in which he said, “Federalism is the cornerstone of our democracy. It’s the United STATES of America.”
Newsom is among a number of Democratic governors seen as presidential prospects in 2028, as far away as that is. During Biden’s reelection campaign, Newsom was frequently asked if he would enter the race this year.
According to Newsom’s proclamation for a special session,
In a statement, Newsom said, “The freedoms we hold dear in California are under attack — and we won’t sit idle. California has faced this challenge before, and we know how to respond. We are prepared to fight in the courts, and we will do everything necessary to ensure Californians have the support and resources they need to thrive.”
