The Chief of Staff to the President, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to transparency in Nigeria’s extractive industries during a visit to the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative House in Abuja on Tuesday.
His visit, which included a comprehensive tour of NEITI’s state-of-the-art Data Center, underscored the government’s support for NEITI’s efforts to enhance transparency and accountability in managing the nation’s natural resources.
Gbajabiamila, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, State House, Olufunso Adebiyi, the Senior Special Assistant to the President, Administration and Operations, Mrs Oyinade Nathan-Marsh, and other key aides, was briefed by NEITI’s Executive Secretary, Dr Ogbonnaya Orji.
The tour of the Data Center showcased the advanced technological systems that are integral to NEITI’s mission.
In his remarks, Gbajabiamila commended NEITI for its “unwavering dedication to promoting transparency in the extractive sector and ensuring that Nigeria’s natural resources are managed in a way that benefits all Nigerians.”
He emphasised the administration’s continued financial backing, stating, “The federal government is fully committed to providing the necessary funding and resources to ensure that NEITI’s work continues to impact the nation positively.”
Moreover, Gbajabiamila pledged to “mobilise both political and social support for NEITI’s initiatives,” ensuring that the organisation’s efforts to enhance governance in the extractive sector are sustained and expanded.
In response, Orji expressed his appreciation for the Chief of Staff’s visit and the government’s ongoing support.
He noted, “NEITI’s success in promoting transparency and accountability is largely dependent on the political will and backing of the government.”
He expressed optimism that the visit would further strengthen the partnership between NEITI and the federal government.
The visit is seen as a significant step in the federal government’s ongoing efforts to bolster transparency and good governance within Nigeria’s extractive industries.
As NEITI continues to lead the charge in promoting accountability, support from the federal government will be crucial in ensuring that the benefits of Nigeria’s natural resources are equitably shared among all citizens.
He noted that NEITI, the Nigerian national chapter of the global Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, remains dedicated to ensuring that revenues from Nigeria’s oil, gas, and mining sectors are properly accounted for and used for the benefit of all Nigerians.
