EXCLUSIVE: George Lopez is planning to move on from the stand-up stage.
Lopez revealed that he will be retiring from stand-up comedy after the release of his upcoming special on Amazon’s Prime Video.
Speaking to Tamron Hall on her syndicated talk show, Lopez said, “It is the last one. I’ve subjected the American people to enough of my crap. It seems like the right time; it’s been the one thing that has just never left me my whole life and it’s a wonderful place to leave it at this particular point.”
Lopez added that he wanted to spend more time with his daughter Mayan Lopez, who he stars alongside in NBC comedy Lopez vs Lopez, which is heading into its third season. “I love the show,” he added.
It comes after Deadline revealed that Lopez filmed a new one-hour special as part of his “ALLLRIIIIGHHTTT! Comedy” tour. Filmed at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on September 27 and 28, it is produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Travieso Productions.
Lopez has released a number of stand-up specials over the years including most recently on Netflix with We’ll Do It for Half in 2020. He previously had four HBO specials The Wall (2017), It’s Not Me, It’s You (2012), Tall, Dark and Chicano (2009), and America’s Mexican (2007) as well as the acclaimed comedy concert Why You Crying? for Showtime.
Lopez has previously hinted at retirement from the stand-up circuit, while promoting golf movie Walking with Herb in 2021.
Lopez vs. Lopez returns to NBC on October 18. Season two saw Mayan and the Lopez family undergoing big changes while George took his first step in sobriety. It stars George Lopez and Mayan Lopez alongside Selenis Leyva, Matt Shively, Brice Gonzalez and Al Madrigal with Vicki Lawrence, Francia Raisa, Rizwan Manji, Annie Gonzalez, and Adam Irigoyen appearing as guest stars for season three
Co-created by Debby Wolfe, who exec produces alongside Bruce Helford, George Lopez, Michael Rotenberg and Katie Newman, the series is produced by Universal Television, in association with Mohawk Productions, Travieso Productions, Mi Vida Loba and 3 Arts.
Tamron Hall is currently in its sixth season. The series is produced and distributed by Disney Entertainment Distribution and is in first-run syndication on ABC-Owned Television Stations across the U.S. and Canada. Lopez and his daughter will be on the show on October 24.
