Getafe president reveals Mason Greenwood preference over Manchester United return

Getafe president Angel Torres claims Manchester United’s on-loan forward Mason Greenwood is keen to stay with the Spanish club for another season.

Greenwood joined Getafe in the closing stages of the summer transfer window after United concluded from their own internal investigation that the 22-year-old should restart his career elsewhere following his arrest in January 2022 for attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault.

Greenwood had all charges against him dropped last February and United had considered reintegrating him back into Erik ten Hag’s squad before the club received major backlash from supporters over his potential return.

Since joining Getafe, Greenwood has been in excellent form with five goals and five assists so far this season.

Earlier this week, United’s new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe refused to rule out the possibility of Greenwood returning to Old Trafford but Torres believes Greenwood wants to extend his stint in La Liga.

‘They asked us about it, there was a lot of talk about the issue of abuse and we found out what had happened and I said, ‘let’s go’,’ Torres told Spanish radio station Cope.

‘He has a clear conscience, he is very comfortable and crazy about staying another year.

‘It’s a matter that they [United] have to decide. There is new ownership. They have to decide.

‘In Spain he has a market but they [Barcelona] have money. Barca’s way of playing would suit him well but it depends on Manchester United. If it’s true, he’ll tell me.’

Torres also denied suggestions that Getafe has submitted an official complaint after Jude Bellingham appeared to call Greenwood a rapist during his side’s 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid earlier this month.

‘Greenwood is dedicated to playing. We have not reported.

‘When the games end, I leave after ten minutes and I didn’t ask to be included in the game report.

‘I have not discussed this with Florentino [Perez, Real Madrid’s president] because there is nothing to talk about.’
