María José Rodríguez, the veteran international TV executive who just exited her role in charge of original production at Amazon’s Prime Video in Spain, has been hired as managing director of Globomedia, the Spanish-based content producer run by The Mediapro Studio.

In the new role, Rodríguez, who worked in several capacities at Globomedia from 1997-2007, will be tasked with overseeing Globomedia’s content strategy and production operations, the Madrid-based company said Monday. She will report directly to Mediapro Studio CEO Laura Fernández Espeso and starts September 1.

“Globomedia is a pivotal brand for the studio, playing a crucial role in our overall strategy,” Espeso said. “With her extensive experience and impressive track record, María José brings invaluable expertise in both fiction and non-fiction content production. She is a respected and well-regarded professional within the industry. We are delighted to welcome her to our team, where she will lead such an important brand for us.”

The news comes just a week after Rodríguez was part of a Prime Video Presents event in Madrid, where her team showed off its new content slate on the heels of what Ricardo Cabornero, director at Prime Video in Spain and Portugal, said had been a “record-breaking year” for the service in Iberia.

Rodríguez joined Amazon in 2020 as head of original production in Spain, launching global titles including Culpa Mía, Reina Roja, Los Farad and the live-airing OT. She previously worked at Movistar+ channel #0 and directed original production at Discovery Max. In her first go-round at Globomedia, she worked on such shows as Noche Hache, The Comedy Club and Disney Club.

Globomedia’s film and TV productions are currently available in either their original or adapted versions in more than 140 countries. Titles include series Paraíso, Nasdrovia, Locked Up, Estoy Vivo, The Boarding School, Aída, Los Serrano, Red Eagle, 7 Vidas, The Boat, Un Paso Adelante and Paco’s Men.

Its success on the entertainment program front includes the long-running El Intermedio and Zapeando, both on Spain’s LaSexta; Atrápame si Puedes; and The Musical of your Life on Mediaset.
