Wayne Rooney, 38 years old and a good hundredweight on the scales, scored a magnificent free-kick on Saturday against Celtic Glasgow.

With Harry Kane, the man who overtook him as England’s all-time leading scorer, in action for the Three Lions this Saturday against Ireland, Wayne Rooney has certainly not forgotten how to put the ball in the back of the net. At 38, and despite being far from his peak fitness, the former Manchester United captain brought Old Trafford to life in a match between the Red Devils and Celtic legends.

It has been two years since a Manchester United player scored from a direct free-kick at the Theatre of Dreams, and Rooney was there to remind the fans in attendance of that sweet feeling. His curling free-kick into the top corner was Mancunian’s only goal of the game.

He also scored his penalty

It was the Scots who won on penalties (5-4) in this gala match. Wayne Rooney also converted his penalty, he who played his last match with Manchester United in 2017 and his last career match with Derby County in 2021.

This season, Wayne Rooney is in charge of Plymouth Argyle in the Championship. After four games, the Pilgrims have lost twice and drawn twice.
