The Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, on Friday, commended serving corps members for their contributions to the development of the health, education, and agricultural sectors in the state.

Yahaya, represented by the State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Inuwa Adamu, made this statement while declaring open the mandatory three-week orientation camp at Amada, Akko Local Government Area of the state.

Our correspondent reports that a total of 1,674 corps members were registered at the time of compiling this report, comprising 903 males and 771 females.

The governor said, “The selfless service of corps members has significantly contributed to the developmental strides in the health, education, agriculture, and infrastructure sectors of the economy. I can confidently say that the scheme remains a valuable instrument of development, and it is my ardent hope that you will join in this rewarding journey of nation-building.”

While urging them to remain peaceful as they complete the orientation and prepare for posting to communities within the state, Yahaya encouraged the corps members to “live harmoniously with fellow compatriots, despite varying cultural and socio-ethnic backgrounds, to promote the integrity of our nation as one united and indivisible entity.

“The future of this country lies in your hands; therefore, you have a crucial role to play in shaping our collective destiny. Do not squander this unique opportunity that will allow you to rise to greater heights and secure a sustainable future.”

The governor also advised the corps members to acquire relevant skills, stating that “you may not see the benefits immediately, but it will become an added advantage for you in the wider world. Note that your degree is rarely sufficient these days, so it is essential to have additional skills to enhance your profile.”

He pledged that the state government would ensure an enabling environment for the National Youth Service Corps to thrive.

In her remarks, the State NYSC Coordinator, Chinwe Nwachuku, commended the corps members for their conduct since the commencement of camp activities.

She prayed for a “hitch-free orientation course and, by extension, a fruitful, peaceful, and fulfilling service year.”
