The Gombe State Commissioner for Higher Education, Mohammed Gadam, disclosed on Saturday that Governor Muhammadu Yahaya has spent no less than N1 billion in the last three months to clear earned academic allowances and promotional arrears at the state-owned university.

Gadam made this announcement during the third matriculation ceremony for 450 students and an academic honour presentation at North-Eastern University, Gombe.

He said, “As you may be aware, this administration, under the able leadership of His Excellency Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has spent over a billion Naira within a span of three months on state-owned tertiary institutions. This includes clearing earned allowances for Gombe State University staff, funding for the Faculty of Environmental Studies at the Gombe State University Dukku Campus, building a new School of Nursing Sciences with state-of-the-art facilities in Gombe Metropolis, paying accreditation fees for institutions, and more.

“This demonstrates the commitment of Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya to the education sector and the overall development of Gombe State.”

While commending the matriculating students, Gadam noted that the occasion marked a significant milestone in their academic journey, encouraging them to embrace the opportunities and challenges ahead.

Gadam added, “Focus on your studies, work hard, read diligently, engage in research, and demonstrate integrity, respect, and responsibility throughout your time at the university.

“I also urge you to avoid all forms of social vices, such as drug abuse and any negative behaviours that could harm your future.”

Also speaking, Governor Yahaya, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibrahim Njodi, emphasised the importance of skills acquisition to become self-employed.

He said, “There are no government jobs now. However, I know you will be given the necessary support to acquire skills. If you want to excel in life, come to North-Eastern University.”

The Pro-Chancellor of NEU, Dr Sani Jauro, stressed that the university has zero tolerance for rule violations, urging students to avoid behaviours that could tarnish the institution’s reputation or the efforts of their parents.

“Those who violate our rules will face consequences. Nothing will prevent us from enforcing discipline,” he added.

Dr Jauro further explained that the aim is to instil discipline, saying, “We want students to earn a degree in both character and learning. For instance, if a student does not have 70 per cent attendance in a course, they will not be allowed to sit for the examination, regardless of the circumstances. This policy will be strictly enforced in their results.

“Attend classes regularly and do not violate our rules. We assure parents that we will not let them down.”

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of NEU, Prof Yusuph Yahaya, emphasised the institution’s respect for its students’ abilities and commitment to fostering an environment of confidence and decorum.

He added, “We have zero tolerance for any form of indiscipline or vice. At NEU, we believe this approach will help our students become among the best in the world.

“The pace of change we have seen since our inception has been driven by three factors: an administrative class aiming to minimise complaints, a subset of academics who actively uphold the no-nonsense traditions set by our Founders through the Governing Council, and a group of students willing to follow the institution’s rules.

“To our dear parents, I want to stress that education is a team effort between parents, students, and teachers.”
