The Enugu State Government has approved the relocation of two slums, Agu-Owa and Ugbo-Lawrence, in the metropolis, as part of Governor Peter Mbah’s urban renewal agenda.

The move is aimed at transforming the areas into modern dwellings.

In a statement on Sunday, the governor’s media office announced that the state has also designated relocation sites at Akpuoga Nike Estate for the affected residents.

The relocation plan includes offering each displaced family a two-bedroom flat and a Certificate of Occupancy for their new property.

The decision was reached during the State Executive Council meeting, presided over by Mbah over the weekend.

The state Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Gerald Otiji, confirmed the development, stating that the government had identified 25 slums in Enugu metropolis, with Agu-Owa and Ugbo-Lawrence selected as pilot schemes for the relocation project.

He said, “The Exco approved the urban renewal and relocation of urban slums. We are beginning with two pilot schemes—Agu-Owa at Trans-Ekulu and Ugbo-Lawrence at Independence Layout.

:Residents will be moved to Akpuoga Nike Estate, an enclosed estate with modern amenities, including paved roads, electricity, and sports facilities. Certificates of Occupancy will be issued to all relocated families.”

Otiji assured all that the government’s urban renewal agenda would leave no one behind, urging residents of the affected areas to cooperate with the authorities to benefit fully from the project.
