Former Newcastle boss Graeme Souness believes Harry Kane has aided Bayern Munich's decision to try to sign Kieran Trippier.

Bayern are shock contenders to make a move for Newcastle star Trippier, who played with Kane at Tottenham for four years.

It would be the second surprise arrival at Munich in January, who have already snapped up another of Kane's former teammates in Eric Dier this month.

And speaking on talkSPORT's White and Jordan Show, Souness believes Kane's impact at the Bundesliga champions is affecting their transfer plans.

Souness told Jim White and Simon Jordan: “In this case, the catalyst in this is Harry Kane.

“Obviously the manager (Thomas Tuchel) has worked in England so he’ll know the qualities of Trippier, he’s a really good footballer.

“If that’s the need – I think the player will definitely want to go.

“I think he’s served his purpose at Newcastle and was a bit of a magnet for people going there and I think he’s done a great job for them.

“He’ll see the chance to join one of the biggest clubs in the world and the chance to win trophies as a great way to finish your career.”

Newcastle have made the stance that they do not want to see Trippier leave this month despite financial fair play rules stopping them from splashing the cash this month.

The Magpies have been in free fall lately after being stricken by injuries, plummeting to tenth in the Premier League.

talkSPORT understands that Trippier is open to the move and talks have taken place between the two clubs.

Harry Kane corrected by reporter after calling Bayern Munich teammate Manuel Neuer 'one of the best goalkeepers in the world'

Kane signed for Bayern Munich in the summer from Tottenham and has made an immediate impact, scoring 26 times in 24 appearances - including 22 in the Bundesliga.

However, the German giants are lagging behind in the league this season and find themselves seven points behind Bayer Leverkusen.

Xabi Alonso's men are unbeaten this season in the Bundesliga while Bayern lost 1-0 at home to Werder Bremen on Sunday.

It means Kane's dream of finally winning a trophy could be spectacularly scuppered with the club already crashing out of the DFB-Pokal Cup in one of the biggest shocks of all time when third tier side Saarbrucken beat them.

It leaves the Champions League and Bundesliga as the only trophies that Kane can lift this season.
