23 matchdays into La Liga, and the race is once again down to two horses. As is the tradition, the battle is again between Real Madrid and a Catalan opposition, albeit not Barcelona.

Xavi’s side lag behind the leaders by a staggering eight points and are far away from competing for the title.

Yet, they must battle as long as there is a mathematical possibility, and their game against Granada later this week will see them continue on the same objective.

Gumbau backs Barcelona amidst adversity

The 2023-24 season has not been easy by any means for Barcelona, with tricky results and unexpected defeats knocking them down repeatedly.

The blame is shared between the managers and the players, but the fact remains that they appear set to go trophy-less this campaign.

Speaking to the media ahead of his team’s clash against Barcelona, Granada star Gerard Gumbau openly addressed Barcelona’s poor form this season and insisted that his side must look to capitalise on the same.

“Barça are a great team regardless of where they are at the moment. But I think they may have underperformed at home and we’re going to try to make it uncomfortable for them,” he said (h/t SPORT).

Elaborating on his team’s upcoming clash against Xavi’s side, the midfielder said,

“The match against Barcelona? A game against Barcelona is always a challenge that you face with a lot of energy and a lot of desire, which means that we go to Barcelona with a very clear idea of the game we want to play.”

With Real Madrid taking on Girona in the upcoming match day, the clash against Granada will be Barcelona’s best chance of bridging a part of the gap with the leaders. After all, one, or both teams, will drop points on the night.
