Green light from Laporta: Barcelona to amplify their investment in Africa

Barcelona have taken a significant step forward in its efforts to invest in African football talent. 

According to a recent report from SPORT, President Joan Laporta has given the green light to increase the club’s focus and resources on scouting and nurturing talent from the African continent.

Historically, Barcelona have been able to sign top talent from around the world without much financial strain. 

The club once operated in a position of strength, rarely needing to sell players to fund new signings. However, recent economic challenges have forced the club to reconsider its strategies. 

With English and French clubs dominating the European transfer market with their financial muscle, Barcelona have recognised the need to explore new avenues for talent acquisition and Africa has emerged as a promising solution.

Barcelona exploring African markets

In response to this changing landscape, Barcelona’s technical department has been actively pursuing agreements with football academies in countries like Senegal, Mali, and Ivory Coast over the past year. 

The club has increased its scouting efforts, closely monitoring local tournaments and scouting emerging talent. Frequent trips to Africa by Barcelona’s representatives have become common as the club aims to strengthen its influence in the region.

These efforts have already begun to bear fruit. The club has secured the services of promising young players such as 17-year-old Malian Ibrahim Diarra and 18-year-old Ghanaian Aziz Issah, who has recently been loaned out. 

Additionally, David Oduro, another 18-year-old talent from Ghana, will be joining Barça Atlètic, the club’s reserve team.

What is Barcelona’s plan?

According to sources, some of these players are expected to make their mark as future Barcelona stars, while others might be sold for a profit once their market value increases, as seen in the case of Mikayil Faye.

Moussa Kone, Barça’s scout in Africa, plays a pivotal role in these efforts, leveraging his strong local connections to open doors for the club. 

Barcelona’s project in Africa is not solely focused on football. It also has a social dimension, aiming to improve the lives of young aspiring footballers. 

The club is involved in various initiatives, including training for coaches and nutritionists, and providing essential sports equipment. 

Through these efforts, Barcelona hopes to make a positive impact on the communities where these young talents come from, all while identifying the next generation of football stars.
