Greenwood, the shock decision!

It would be an understatement to say that Mason Greenwood is not a prophet in his own country. The English striker had to go into exile after the serious extra-sporting affairs in which he was involved. Manchester United did not want to reinstate him once the shockwave had dissipated and loaned him for a year to Getafe, before selling him to Olympique de Marseille. In the Premier League, no club has made the effort to try to recover a player who until recently was considered one of the greatest talents in the world of football.

Since the beginning of his disgrace, Greenwood has not been selected for the England team either, in a group that is admittedly already very competitive in the attacking sector. It is very possible that we will never see the Marseille number 10 with the Three Lions again… but under the jersey of another selection!

A FIFA rule allows him to change countries

According to the Sun, Mason Greenwood is set to renounce his English nationality and apply for a place in the Jamaican team, where his family is from. While he has one official cap for England – a Nations League match – the ex-Mancunian can rely on a FIFA rule that allows players to have worn a national team jersey no more than three times before the age of 21. This is the case for Greenwood, who seems keen to play international matches, possibly a World Cup if the Reggae Boys qualify, but without the media attention that would accompany a comeback with England.

The English Football Association has reportedly already received the documents informing Greenwood that he wants to change his sporting nationality, and it is probably only a matter of weeks before this is confirmed. While waiting for this file to evolve, the player who scored twice for his first appearance in an official match with OM last weekend against Brest (1-5) will be in action again on Sunday against Stade de Reims, for his first appearance at the Orange Vélodrome.
