The rumor is growing: Antoine Griezmann could leave Atlético Madrid in January to join Major League Soccer. With the MLS season starting in February, some are already imagining the Frenchman flying to the United States, where a final challenge would await him. But what is it really? Atlético president Enrique Cerezo spoke out to clarify the situation.

Griezmann, still at the top

Before talking about a possible departure, we must underline the extraordinary current form of the Mâconnais. With 11 goals and 6 assists in 25 games this season, including 21 as a starter, the Frenchman is quite simply one of the best players in La Liga. In Atlético’s last 7 matches, he has scored 7 goals, an impressive rate of production. This rise in power coincides with his choice to stop the national team last September, a decision which allows him to concentrate fully on his club. The Matelassiers know that they can count on Griezmann at the top of his game. But for how much longer?

Griezmann and Atlético, a separation in sight?

Questioned by the daily As, Enrique Cerezo responded cautiously to speculation about Griezmann’s departure. “I don’t know if this will be Griezmann’s last season, any more than I know if it will be mine,” he declared. “What I can say is that he is a fundamental player for Atlético de Madrid and for the whole of Europe.”

The president also highlighted the player’s loyalty and commitment to the club: “Antoine is an athlete with a big heart. What he wants is the good of Atlético and to see the team winr.” But behind these laudatory words, no certainty emerges about Griezmann’s future.

An uncertain future

Despite sparkling performances, the future of the 2018 world champion remains a mystery. Can Atlético afford to lose their best player in the middle of the season? If MLS represents an opportunity for the player, it could be a hard blow for the ambitions of the Colchoneros. One thing is certain: the Griezmann soap opera is far from over.
