Having had great success at the start of the season with Atlético, Antoine Griezmann led his team to a victory against Leipzig on Thursday evening in the opening match of the Champions League (2-1).

Three goals and three assists in six matches for Atlético, Antoine Griezmann has had his best start to the season since 2016! “Grizi” was once again the providential man for the Madrid team for a snatched victory against Leipzig (2-1), Thursday, for the first day of the Champions League. The 33-year-old French international is reliving his particularly difficult Euro 2024.

RBL opened the scoring early on through Benjamin Sesko (4th), but Diego Simeone’s men then took control of the game. Griezmann equalized with a great right-footed shot from a cross from Marcos Llorente (28th). He had found the net six times in the Champions League.

The Colchoneros failed to score a second goal despite their attempt, but as injury time approached, Atlético’s French number 7 sent in a cross – again with his right! – for Jose Maria Gimenez’s fierce and victorious header (90th). Madness at the Civitas Metropolitano.

Atlético do not have an easy schedule in the Champions League, with upcoming matches against Benfica, Lille (at home), PSG (at the Parc des Princes), Sparta Prague, Slovan Bratislava and Leverkusen and Salzburg in January 2025.
