Atletico Madrid are reportedly not considering extending Antoine Griezmann’s contract amid speculation he could move to Major League Soccer.

According to Spanish publication Marca, the Spanish club is trying to reduce its wage bill and, with Griezmann being one of its highest earners – in addition to the fact that he will be 35 when his contract expires in 2026 – it could let his lease run out. On the other hand, the report adds that no one at the club doubts that the Frenchman could stay beyond 2026, but only if he continues to deliver good performances – and perhaps with a reduced salary.

The 33-year-old is an Atletico legend, with a record of 181 goals and 84 assists in 389 appearances. Together, the club and player have won the Europa League, Supercopa de Espana, UEFA Super Cup and have been a force on the European stage. But if the former Barcelona man does not stay at Atletico, which he has said will be his last team in Europe, a move to MLS would interest him.

Griezmann, the MLS is waiting for him

Last year, Griezmann said when asked about his long-term future: “Saudi Arabia? I understand those who have to go there, we are talking about incredible sums of money. Could I go there? I have a family, three children. It is not an easy decision to make. MLS remains my priority.”

Griezmann, who helped France reach the semi-finals of Euro 2024, is currently enjoying his summer break but will return for pre-season in the coming days. The new La Liga season kicks off in mid-August, and the World Cup-winning forward will be looking to get back to his best.
