A group, the Supreme Council for Sim, Worldwide, has passed a vote of confidence in the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, and his administration.

The Council also threw its weight fully behind the governor’s setting up of a judicial commission of enquiry to probe the violence, including the burning of the secretariats of some local government councils in the state, in the aftermath of the October 5, 2024 council poll.

The council stated this at a news briefing in Port Harcourt after its emergency national executive meeting.

Speaking on behalf of the council, former acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, and former Commissioner for Information in the state, Mrs Ibim Semenitari, lauded Governor Fubara for providing a level playing ground for all the 18 registered political parties that took part in the election.

Semenitari added, “The council applauds Governor Fubara for providing the required support to the River State Independent Electoral Commission and for the smooth conduct of the local government election in River State.”

Noting that the council election conducted on October 5, 2024 has been adjudged to be the most peaceful, despite the unfortunate withdrawal of the Nigerian Police Force from carrying out their constitutional duties, she condemned the violence that rocked some councils after the elections.

The council said, “We are particularly grateful that the governor carried out this election in compliance with the Supreme Court ruling and the presidential directives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The Supreme Council for Sim, however, condemns in strongest terms the unwarranted and unprovoked attack on some local government secretariats in the state after a peaceful and credible election had been conducted without any record of violence.

“We view this act that did not only destroy legacies but also took human lives, as barbaric, undemocratic and an affront to the people of River State.

“We therefore express support for the establishment of the judicial panel of inquiry to unravel the arsonist, and their sponsors and recommend appropriate sanctions for all of the culprits.”

The council took a swipe at the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over his comments on the violence in some local councils of the state during an interview on Channels Television recently.

Semenitari, a former Commissioner for Information and Communications in the state said, “The Supreme Council for Sim Worldwide is simply worried that the FCT Minister appears to be a recurring decimal in a political crisis that has bedevilled Rivers State.

“We therefore wish to call on President Tinubu to call the Minister of the FCT to order, lest his activities in Rivers State discredit the federal administration.

“The Supreme Council for Sim unanimously passed a vote of confidence on Governor Fubara and his administration and urged the people of Rivers State to continue to pray for our governor.”

The council urged the elected chairmen in all the 23 local councils to tow the path of honour and diligence in the discharge of their duties as exemplified by Governor Fubara.

It said, “We ask that they all work to ensure that the people of Rivers State benefit from good governance as they discharge their duties.”
