A group of private school owners in Nigeria, the Network of Private Independent and Articulate School Executives, has condemned the multiple taxation of private school owners by various government agencies.

Speaking at the inauguration of the association in Ogun State on Saturday, NIAPSE’s Vice President, Desmond Ayeleso, described it as a major challenge facing the education sector.

He also lamented the excessive taxation while advocating relief for affected school owners.

He said “There has not been any pressure for sustainable education policy and we need to take education development to the grassroots. That is what our association is aimed at ensuring by uniting school owners.

“One of the things we want to achieve by coming together is to assist school owners in getting peace of mind in their school business and to also conveniently impart quality education to school children.

“NIAPSE will act as a pressure group on the government to ensure the reduction of some of the taxes that are paid by school owners to the government and examination bodies. This multiple taxation is stifling the growth of private education in Nigeria.”

Ayeleso noted that NIAPSE was not founded to compete with any other association but to develop education, especially in the private education sector.

He said, “There has not been any pressure for sustainable education policy and we need to take education development to the grassroots. That is what our association is aimed at ensuring by uniting school owners.”

Ayeleso stated that the group “is around now to fight the issue of multiple taxations against school owners by the government.”

The National President of the group, Tope Adeniyi–Martins, while delivering his speech at the occasion, said that NIAPSE remained focused on delivering the network and tools, professional development, best practices and idea sharing to private school owners in Nigeria.

He listed the core values of the group as independent thinking, enforcing diversity, championing inclusivity, leading change and empowering the community.

Prof Sola Aletan of the Department of Education Foundation, University of Lagos, described NIAPSE as “a catalyst for change.”

He said “I recognise the incredible potential that exists within this association. You, as visionary members and leaders, have the unique opportunity to drive meaningful change in the education system.”
