The Ofokutu Vanguard Group of the Ofokutu Royal family in Ilesha, Osun State, has urged the next Owa Obokun to build upon the legacies of the late Oba Adekunle Aromolaran.

The first-class monarch died in September at the age of 86.

The group, in a statement signed on Thursday by its coordinator, Adediran  Ofokutu, said the late monarch left a void that could only be filled by a successor who embodied the same attributes and qualities.

He said the late Aromolaran’s exceptional leadership, wisdom, and vision left an indelible mark on the history of Ijesha land.

The statement read, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved Kabiyesi, Owa Obokun. His passing is a tremendous loss, not only to Ijesaland but to the entire Yoruba nation. His exceptional leadership, wisdom, and vision have left an indelible mark on our history.

“We, however, wish to emphasise the importance of continuity and legacy of the monarch when selecting a successor. The next Owa of Ijesha land must embody the same attributes that made our beloved Kabiyesi great.

“He must possess his wisdom, compassion, and vision. He must be prepared to consolidate on his legacies, building upon the foundation he laid.”

Ofokutu stressed the significance of the people’s will in selecting the next king, stating that the wishes of the Ijesa people must be respected and prioritised in the succession process.

He also underscored the need to maintain the existing rotational system in selecting the next king.

“This time-honoured tradition has ensured peace, stability, and fairness in our kingdom. It must be preserved and respected.

“The rotational system has served us well, and we must continue to uphold its principles.

“Four royal houses rotate accession to the throne. This includes, Biladu, Bilagbayo, Bilaro, and Bilayirere and this rotational cycle which has never been altered should be allowed to remain and not be scuttled under any circumstances.

“The future of our dear Ijesha land should not be sacrificed on the altar of compromise.

“The Ofokutu Royal family stands with the family of the late monarch and the people of Ijesaland during this difficult time. May the memories of our departed Kabiyesi continue to inspire and guide us as we move forward. May his legacy be a beacon of hope and unity for our kingdom,” the statement added.
