As rumors of a departure flourished, the Spanish coach decided to stay at Manchester City. The Skyblues coach has lifted the veil on the motivations for his extension.
Excellent news has fallen from Manchester City: Pep Guardiola is extending his adventure. Initially at the end of his contract, the Spanish coach, present on the Skyblues bench since the summer of 2016, gave himself time to think. Finally, he decided to sign for two additional years, until June 2027. Great satisfaction for the reigning English champions, who made this announcement official this Friday via their social networks and their official website.
“This is my ninth season here, we’ve had so many incredible moments together. I have a very special feeling for this football club. That’s why I’m so happy to stay for two more seasons. Thank you to everyone who continues to trust and support me: the owner, the president Khaldoon, Ferran, Txiki, the players and of course the fans… Everyone linked to Manchester City. It has always been an honor, a pleasure and a privilege to be here”expressed Guardiola with emotion.
A decisive match to restart the machine
When discussing the reasons for his choice, the Catalan explained that his team’s poor results had weighed in his decision. “Why stay? Well, I felt like I couldn’t leave now. It’s that simple. Don’t ask me why. Maybe the four defeats were the reason why I felt I couldn’t leave…”confided the 53-year-old tactician.
However, Guardiola and his men will have to quickly redress the situation. The Citizens remain in fact on a series of four consecutive defeats in all competitions, including two in the Premier League. A wake-up call is expected this Saturday, with the reception of Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium.
