Gunther won the WWE Intercontinental Championship in June 2022 and eventually became the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in history. However, he doesn’t really have a proper finisher and now Gunther revealed why that is the case.
Gunther has got a ton of attention for his intense in-ring style, solidifying himself as a must-see talent. He showcases a diverse repertoire, featuring moves such as the classic folding powerbomb, The Last Symphony slam, and a top rope splash.
Known for delivering some of the hardest chops, strikes, and big boots in the business, Gunther’s arsenal also includes the front dropkick, Boston Crab, German suplex, Gojira Clutch sleeper, Burning Lariat, and the Fire Thunder Driver, establishing him as The Ring General with a variety of impactful maneuvers.
While speaking with Fightful, Gunther responded to questions about him lacking a finisher. Gunther pointed out that while having a definitive finishing move is a wrestling cliché, he values logical storytelling in his matches. With nearly 19 years of experience as a ring veteran, he put stress on the importance of making decisions that make sense for the context and situation in each match.
“It’s like a… it’s a wrestling cliché, with the finishers and stuff, but it’s also like a very… it’s a thing that WWE really established, I think, and I see the big upside to it, to be honest. But I always approached my wrestling [with] logic. Like, whatever makes sense, at that day to do, in that situation. So, that’s how I always approached it and, yeah….”
Gunther also contemplated relinquishing the Intercontinental Championship if he ever wins the WWE World Heavyweight Title. It remains to be seen how Gunther will fare in the Royal Rumble match on January 27th.
