EXCLUSIVE: GVN Releasing has picked up July 7: Who Killed the President?, a Haitian-set and produced political thriller from filmmaker Robenson Lauvince.
GVN will release the film in U.S. cinemas on May 16, a few days before Haitian Flag Day on May 18.
Inspired by true events, the film interrogates the assassination of former Haitian president Jovenel Moïse. The narrative follows Shedeline, a curious college student, who travels to Haiti to unravel the life of the president for a memoir. Her investigation plunges her into the heart of a life-changing event, providing her with a front-row seat to the chaos and intrigue of a bloody political firestorm. This unexpected journey introduces a terrifying twist to what she thought would be an ordinary story, leaving her with the heavy burden of answering the prodigious question hanging over an unsettled nation: Who killed the president?
Lauvince directs from a screenplay penned by Paul Henry Athis, Gary Victor, and Hollandy Desrosiers. The film is a Clearshot Entertainment production in association with Aldea Studio.
“July 7: Who Killed the President? is more than a film; it’s a moment of truth for Haiti,” Lauvince said in a statement. “This is the first time our story is being told from our own perspective, through the lens of a Haitian, with the depth, dignity, and complexity it deserves.” He added: “For the Haitian community, it’s a mirror and a megaphone—a reflection of our pain, our resilience, and our right to demand justice. My hope is that this film not only reaches hearts but also opens eyes around the world. Commercial success is important, not just to break barriers, but to prove that our stories have global value and power. This is a defining moment for Haitian cinema, and I believe the world is ready to listen. July 7 is the reality of my nation.”
