Nigeria coach José Peseiro is sad not to have won the CAN, but Sebastien Haller is happy to have helped the country achieve its dream.

Brighton & Hove Albion player Simon Adingra, 22, was man of the match against Nigeria, providing two assists for Ivory Coast. The winger explains how his team overcame difficult times to win the third AFCON trophy in their history.

“It’s the strength of the group and the state of mind that allowed us to win”, the striker told the media after the final. ” NOTe had some tough times, but we got back up, even though it wasn’t easy. It is thanks to our mental strength that we regained our chances and that we achieved what we did today.”

“Haller deserves it, he was incredible for Ivory Coast”

Arsenal legend Kolo Toure has raved about Sebastien Haller’s exploits, saying it was what he and the country needed. “ I’m very happy for Haller, he’s been through a tough time but he’s been amazing for the team,” the former defender told BBC Three.

“He is a humble man who works hard for the team. He is someone who wants to help his teammates. I’m very happy that he scored this goal, it’s fantastic for him and for the country.

Haller missed the start of the biennial competition before being introduced later. He scored the winning goal against DR Congo in the semi-final before sealing the title with a goal in the final. “We have dreamed of this moment so many times, we hoped it would come to this”, the Borussia Dortmund striker told the BBC. “ The scenes of joy that we see now, what is happening in the country, they deserve it too. “After the big defeat against Equatorial Guinea, we had no choice. We have come a long way. There were words, moments, which were not easy for the players, the staff and everyone (but) which were necessary,” he concluded.

Nigeria coach José Peseiro could not hide his disappointment after what he said was a poor performance against the host nation. “Our team had a fantastic tournament but (Sunday evening) Ivory Coast was better”he told the media. “Our team did not show its level. It’s the truth. We didn’t do the same work as in previous rounds. The individual and collective performance was not good enough for us.

“I wanted to win this trophy, my players wanted it too. Unfortunately, we did not succeed. I’m sad, my players too. The performance wasn’t good enough, but I can’t blame them. They gave their best in this tournament. »
