Earlier today, reports emerged claiming that Sergi Roberto and Barcelona had an agreement in place over a new contract but the deal was not signed because of Financial Fair Play issues.

Roberto has become a free agent since his contract with Barça expired on June 30, but it was said that there is an agreement principle between the player and the club and that the extension would be signed if there is salary space.

Hansi Flick seems to close the door on Roberto

However, during his official presentation as Barcelona manager just a while ago, Hansi Flick seemed to have closed the doors on any lingering hopes of Sergi Roberto renewing with the club.

Indeed, when asked about the 32-year-old former club captain, the German tactician replied (h/t Fabrizio Romano): “He’s not Barça player, as things stand.”

Judging by the German’s statements and the fact that Roberto was asked not to join pre-season training with the rest of the team, it appears certain that the doors for the versatile midfielder have been closed.

Fabrizio Romano further reports that Roberto is indeed not expected to sign a new contract with Barcelona following Flick’s arrival and has already started exploring other options.

The 32-year-old is now available as a free agent and has been linked heavily with a move to the Premier League, where Arsenal are said to have enquired about him.

If it is indeed the end of the road for Roberto at Barcelona, the La Masia graduate departs the club after playing 14 seasons with the first team during which he made 375 official appearances and won seven La Liga titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies along with other honours.
