Frenkie de Jong’s future at FC Barcelona has taken an unexpected yet decisive turn, as recent reports from SPORT reveal that new head coach Hansi Flick has firmly requested that the club retain the Dutch midfielder.

For the past few years, De Jong’s name has frequently surfaced in transfer speculations, with many wondering whether he would eventually leave the Blaugrana

However, this summer, things are different. Not only does De Jong have no intention of departing, but Flick also sees him as a vital component of his strategy for Barcelona’s resurgence.

Flick has plans involving De Jong

It is said that Flick has made it explicitly known to the club’s sporting management that De Jong’s continuity is non-negotiable.

The German tactician views him as crucial to his plans, specifically envisioning him as the linchpin in front of the defence.

This position, Flick believes, is where De Jong can best contribute to the team’s success. Once the Dutchman recovers from his lingering ankle injury, which does not have a return date, the manager intends to deploy him in this pivotal role.

From the very beginning of his tenure, Flick has been adamant that the club should not pursue another central midfielder to play as a pivot.

When Flick first arrived at the Blaugrana, sporting director Deco outlined the club’s financial situation and the funds available for new signings.

Flick, understanding the constraints, agreed to focus on enhancing the team’s offensive capabilities rather than bringing in another central midfielder.

What does Flick have in mind?

Flick’s strategy revolves around positioning De Jong directly in front of the defence, supported by another midfielder. This setup has been communicated to the Netherlands star, who feels reassured about his future at the club.

The Dutchman is now solely focused on making a full recovery from his ankle injury, which has kept him sidelined for an extended period.

De Jong is confident that under Flick’s guidance, he will not only regain his starting position but also return to his best form at Barcelona.

Flick’s plan to utilise two central midfielders raises questions about the roles of Pedri and Gavi in the team, especially since both players are currently recovering from injuries.

As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see how Flick manages the midfield dynamics, but one thing is certain: De Jong’s position is secure.
