Hansi Flick likely to rest Barcelona key defender against Espanyol

According to a recent report from SPORT, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is reportedly considering a few adjustments in the defensive lineup for their upcoming game against Espanyol. 

One of the key changes may involve giving young left-back Alejandro Balde a much-needed break. Flick is carefully managing Balde’s workload as the season progresses, and this match could be the ideal opportunity to rest him. 

There is speculation that in case Balde is reset,  players like Hector Fort or Gerard Martin will have a chance to step in and showcase their abilities.

Balde deserves rest

Balde has been one of Barcelona’s standout performers this season, with his impressive showing in El Clasico marking one of his best performances. 

However, the demanding schedule has seen him accumulate almost 1,000 minutes on the pitch across 13 matches so far this season.

He has only come off the bench twice – against Osasuna and Rayo Vallecano – and has otherwise played a key role in the defensive lineup. Given his significant involvement, a rest could help Balde maintain peak performance levels as the season wears on.

In recent matches, Balde’s playing time has been considerable. He completed the full 90 minutes in four of his last five games, only being substituted late in the Alaves match after playing 81 minutes. 

Good time to rotate

With Barcelona currently enjoying a six-point lead at the top of the table, Flick has some flexibility to rotate his squad without immediate pressure. 

This gap allows the manager to prioritise the long-term fitness of his key players, and Balde, a crucial defensive asset, could very well be the one to benefit from this rest.

Ultimately, with a promising lead in La Liga, Flick’s rotation strategy seems both timely and necessary to ensure the team stays competitive across all fronts. 

Balde’s potential rest against Espanyol not only benefits the player but also provides valuable experience to other squad members, contributing to a stronger, more versatile team moving forward.
