Following their final pre-season friendly on the US tour against AC Milan, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick confirmed that they will not sign any midfielders this summer.

Coming into the transfer window, it appeared that the priority objective for Barcelona would be to bring in a pivot midfielder, especially after Oriol Romeu’s signing last summer had backfired.

However, once Flick took over, the focus completely shifted towards attacking additions in the form of Nico Williams and Dani Olmo, while the signing of a defensive midfielder took a backseat.

Now, with the emergence of young talent from the academy in Marc Casado and Marc Bernal, Flick seemingly has enough confidence in the La Masia duo, so much so that he has confirmed Barcelona will no longer sign a new midfielder.

“We have several injured midfielders with great quality. When they come back we will be a better team and I think I have enough players there,” said Flick after the game, referring to the fact that Barça are currently without Pedri, Gavi, and Frenkie de Jong.

Having addressed the transfer situation, Flick also spoke about Barcelona’s performance against AC Milan in a game that ended in a 2-2 draw before the Italians clinched the win on penalties.

“When we all press with intensity, that’s the way to go. Sometimes we have to be braver because it’s necessary. After the break we improved, we changed. It was fantastic how we pressed, the whole team was intense,” said Flick.

“This is what we want. In the second half, we had several chances and they had problems.”

However, the German tactician did insist that there were still areas for his team to improve upon, with the season only ten days away, as he said:

“I want us to enjoy defending and attacking together. There are 10 days to go until the league opener, we are heading in the right direction but we can improve a lot.”

The former Bayern Munich boss expressed his pleasure at seeing Robert Lewandowski score a brace on the night, as he said: “Very happy with his game, his two goals were deserved.”

Discussing the takeaways from the US pre-season tour, Flick insisted that there were plenty of positives for Barcelona to come away with, saying:

“The balance of the tour has been very positive. We had a lot of young players, their quality is enormous. Some players have improved over the last few days. They are adapting to what we want to see.”

Finally, when quizzed about the imminent arrival of Dani Olmo to Barcelona, Flick opted not to discuss the transfer in detail and only said: “It’s not the day to talk about him.”
