Barcelona seldom ever appoint foreign coaches and the list of previous managers to have worked at the club is a testament to the same.
The hiring of Hansi Flick, thus, was surprising to many for it is not often that the Blaugrana look outside the box and rope in a manager with an ideology of his own and lacking in Spanish roots.
Despite having the factors against him, however, the new manager has the dressing room captivated by his word and is leading the club with pride. The respect players hold for him only testifies to his incredible work behind the scenes.
Flick’s words of encouragement
Heading into last night’s game, there was reasonable worry over the mental aspect of the game, especially given Barcelona’s poor record against Bayern Munich in recent years.
However, the manager was instrumental behind the scenes in lifting the team’s spirits and ensuring that they go out all guns blazing at Montjuic.
Speaking to the media after the game, Barcelona phenom Lamine Yamal opened up on what Flick told the team before the game, saying (h/t SPORT):
“He told us that we are Barça, that now he is with us and that it was our turn to win.”
“He told us that we should play the ball, that they are fast, but we are good with the ball at our feet,” he added on the manager’s encouragement.
Indeed, as clarified by the manager, Bayern Munich attempted to dominate Barcelona with their superior press and physique. They even attempted to utilise speed to break down the Catalan defence and created a few chances.
Barcelona, however, relied on their technical ability and frustrated the Germans to no end.
Pedri, Lamine Yamal and Marc Casado among others showed excellent composure on the ball and played through Bayern’s press to take control of the game and the 4-1 result was deserved.
