Hasbro has just dropped its 2024 Halloween catalogue, highlighting some of the seasonally spooky titles now available in its range of games. Tucked between such eerie delights as a Clue special edition themed around What We Do in the Shadows (the central mystery is: who stole Laszlo’s witch-skin hat?) and a Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas-specific Yahtzee is perhaps the most sinister yet must-have board game ever, for horror fans at least: Ouija: The Exorcist.
Yes, you read that right: an honest-to-Satan Ouija board paying licensed homage to 1973’s The Exorcist, a movie about a little kid who becomes possessed by a demon after the deceptively friendly “Captain Howdy” responds to her on a spirit board. This release is taking its place alongside Hasbro’s range of Ouija boards; there’s the classic version, a Wednesday edition, and two other new titles: a “Salem Edition” that taps into witchy history, and a Beetlejuice edition (for times when calling out his name three times is too easy, presumably). But if you’re in the market for a tie-in Ouija board, the choice is abundantly clear!
“The 1973 classic film comes to life with this detailed, glow-in-the-dark collectors’ piece,” Hasbro’s marketing copy reads. “Grab a friend, pose your questions, and find out what wisdom the other side has in store using the custom planchette and board with elements from the film. Relive the horror masterpiece with the boardgame… if you dare! If things go wrong, there’s always The Exorcist.”
Technically, you’ll need two exorcists to get the job done right, but if you can escape being possessed Ouija: The Exorcist sounds like just the right game to pick up to play the next time you’re watch William Friedkin’s unsettling masterpiece—and while you’re awaiting Mike Flanagan’s purportedly terrifying remake too. (Maybe you can ask the spirits to help purge your memories of The Exorcist: Believer while you’re at it?)
Here’s a look at the board and planchette:
