Erik ten Hag has revealed that Scott McTominay could return to the starting line-up for this afternoon’s clash with Luton Town.
The midfielder started the campaign a little further down the pecking order than he’d have liked given Manchester United’s stark competition in the position, but long-term or frequent injuries to the likes of Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat saw McTominay cement his place on the teamsheet.
That was until the emergence of scintillating starlet Kobbie Mainoo into the first-team and Casemiro making his long-awaited comeback from a lenghty layoff, which has seen the Scot benched for the past six Premier League outings, entering the fold after the halfway stage in each.
McTominay, 27, has returned three goal contributions (two goals and one assist) in that time and now ranks as the Reds’ top goalscorer in the division with seven to his name, most of which have been vital match-winners.
The latest one, a header in the 86th minute against Aston Villa, was crucial in terms of closing the gap on the top four and reigniting the fans’ hope of claiming a European place in the table.
Ten Hag hints at line-up reshuffle
As such, it’s thrown him well into contention for the Hatters clash. Ten Hag told club media: “I think, for every game, he’s a consideration and he’s doing it across the whole season. He’s performing very good. He scored so many goals, but not only scoring so many goals, he’s giving, also in other areas, the team a lot. Yeah, and also for Sunday, he’s a consideration.”
