One highly-rated young striker is set to leave Manchester United when his contract expires.
Charlie McNeill is a name that has done the rounds for a few seasons, with fans chatting about what the academy has to offer the first-team. We see examples on a regular basis as Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho emerge as influential players to hopefully make the future bright for our football club.
However, for some youngsters, it doesn’t go to plan.
According to Manchester World, the 20-year-old forward will be released in the coming weeks having fell down the pecking order at Old Trafford.
McNeill joined United from rivals Man City in 2020 for a fee of £750,000 but he’s set to leave following two loan moves in recent years.
After spending the second half of the 2022/23 campaign at Newport County, playing all 20 league matches following his temporary switch, McNeill scored just two goals. He returned to the EFL at the start of the season and signed a short-term deal with Stevenage.
The 20-year-old managed one goals in his three appearances due to the loan spell being cut short due to injury. McNeill returned to United in January and trained with the first-team as a result.
McNeill earned a late cameo against Real Sociedad in the Europa League, which will go down as his only minutes in the Theatre of Dreams. A disappointment given the expectations he would have had for his career at the club.
Additionally, United are expected to go into the market for a ready-made forward player this summer which will only further block McNeill’s route into the matchday squad.
We would still like to wish McNeill the best of luck in finding a new club, though it’s worth mentioning that United have not confirmed
