A hit-and-run driver has reportedly killed one person while leaving another injured after colliding with a motorcycle along the Benin-Sagamu Expressway on Tuesday.
PUNCH Metro learnt from a traffic update by the Commandant General of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Seni Ogunyemi, that the accidents occurred opposite a paediatric hospital located at Ososa along the expressway in the early hours of the day.
According to the update, the impact of the collision led to the death of a yet-to-be-identified passenger while the motorcyclist sustained a high degree of injury.
He said, “There’s a fatal accident involving a runaway truck and two males who are a motorcycle rider and passenger at Ososa opposite a paediatric hospital along the Benin-Sagamu Expressway.
“The dead pillion passenger has been deposited at the Ijebu Ode General Hospital mortuary by TRACE operatives.
“The injured pillion rider was rescued to the General Hospital, Ijebu Ode by Good Samaritans before our arrival.”
The TRACE boss added that the incident led to a traffic situation but was brought under control by operatives of the agency.
“Traffic was earlier affected, but normalcy has been restored by TRACE operatives. The damaged motorcycle has been handed over to police for further investigation,” Ogunyemi stated.
Similarly, on Sunday, a motor accident involving two vehicles —a pick-up truck and a Toyota Camry— in front of Ara-Hall, Ibafo, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway left one person severely injured.
The spokesperson for the state police command, Omolola Odutola, on Tuesday, said the first vehicle, a pick-up truck with registration number AKD 330 XT, was driven by Kazeem Jimoh while the pick-up had two passengers on board: Owolabi Ismail and Quadri Sunday.
During the crash, Sunday was said to have sustained severe injuries, including a fractured leg, and was immediately rushed to the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Yaba, Lagos, for urgent medical treatment.
The police said the accident occurred when the Camry with registration number LSD 692 EV, driven by Kalejaiye Ganiyu, recklessly rammed into the moving pickup truck on the expressway.
In the aftermath of the crash, the police said another unidentified vehicle collided with the rear of the Toyota Camry before fleeing the scene.
She said, “The pickup truck and the Toyota Camry were extensively damaged in the accident and were towed to the police station for safekeeping and further investigation. The vehicle inspection officers also inspected the vehicles.
“Motorcycle police visited the scene, took photographs, and drew a rough sketch map of the incident. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, and further updates are expected.”
