A plastic collector identified as Yusuf Abubakar has reportedly lost his left wrist after he and his colleagues were allegedly attacked by suspected hoodlums in Isara Remo, Ogun State.
PUNCH Metro gathered from a source in the state police command on Wednesday that Abubakar and two others were attacked by the suspects in the Sapaade area of the community on Tuesday.
The victim, reportedly a resident of Toll Gate in Ogere Remo, had allegedly arrived in the community with his colleagues to collect used plastics when a group of hoodlums armed with dangerous weapons pursued them.
Upon spotting the weapon-wielding gang, which numbered about seven, the source said Abubakar and his colleagues took to their heels in a bid to escape. However, the suspects relentlessly continued to chase them.
While two other collectors managed to escape unharmed, Abubakar stumbled and fell face down while trying to flee, allowing the assailants to attack him with their dangerous weapons.
The spokesperson for the command, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident to PUNCH Metro stating that Abubakar was dragged to a nearby forest, where the suspects tied his hands and legs behind him before severing his left wrist.
Odutola said, ”According to Abubakar, he arrived in Ogun State three days ago. At about 8:00 AM on January 6, 2925, he and two others were in the Sapade area to pick up used plastic water bottles when approximately 20 armed hoodlums suddenly began pursuing them with dangerous weapons.
“He alleged that the hoodlums tied both his hands and legs, blindfolded him, and dragged him into a nearby bush. In a gruesome act, they severed his left wrist before abandoning him.
“Abubakar managed to receive treatment at a hospital before reporting the incident to our division in the area. Following his report, the Divisional Crime Branch team and the Divisional Crime Officer visited the scene but found no trace of human activity in the area.”
Odutola encouraged residents to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious activities to security authorities.
PUNCH Metro reported in December 2023 that residents of Saapade, particularly students of the Gateway Polytechnic ICT residing in the area, were plagued by senseless cult killings and armed robberies, resulting in numerous deaths and widespread trauma.
