Chelsea could be set for a hefty cash injection if Newcastle United sign England Euro 2024 star Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.

Newcastle have reportedly opened talks for Guehi who is one of the most highly sought after defenders in the world.

Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal have been linked, as have Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus, and all are on high alert after he reportedly turning down a new contract offer from the Eagles.

The Athletic now claim that Newcastle have made the first move for the 24-year-old, who has just two years left on his contract.

If they pull off the transfer it would be a serious coup for the Magpies, especially after Guehi’s performances at the Euros where he was arguably the Three Lions’ best player.

But if and when he leaves Selhurst Park, Chelsea are also set to benefit massively thanks to a sell-on clause they inserted in the centre-back’s contract when they sold him.

As per The Times, the Blues will receive 20 per cent of whatever profit Palace make on the player, so the higher the fee the better for Todd Boehly and co.

Guehi was signed by Palace in 2021 for £18million and Oliver Glasner’s side have slapped a £70m price tag on him – if they get that fee, that’s a very nice £52m profit.

And it would mean that £10.4m of that would go to Stamford Bridge, impressive work from Chelsea’s transfer negotiators to bank so much from a player who never made a senior appearance for the club.

It is also said that there is a first refusal clause in Guehi’s contract but Chelsea are unlikely to buy back their academy star, even though plenty of fans have wished that they never sold him in the first place.

Palace will be hoping to hold onto their star defender, though they have covered themselves by signing a replacement in the form of Riad Chadi.
